SAKURA-SKY #3
This is a beautiful, small, circular textured woven wall hanging incorporating several of my own handspun yarns alongside a commercially spun blufaced leicester boucle yarn and a comercially spun merino and bamboo blend yarn which I have hand dyed. I have also used a comercially spun two-ply Shetland yarn for the hanger. The piece is finished with a cute ceramic button in the shape of a bird.
The handspun yarns are a bouncy, coiled blend of merino wool, bamboo fibre, trilobal nylon and sparkly angelina, a wispy corespun yarn created by spinning the same fibre around a merino wool yarn core and a banana fibre singles yarn.
This woven piece measures approx. 16cm in diameter (across the frame) and the central woven disc is approx. 12cm in diameter. The little bird measures approx. 4cm from the tip of the beak to the tip of the tail.
The circular frame, which I have wrapped with shetland yarn, is made from sustainable bamboo. The complete length from hanger to bottom of frame is approx. 33cm.
My woven wall hangings are all unique and take many hours to complete, from spinning the yarns, through weaving, to finishing by securing all of the ends and attaching the hanger. They are usually fairly abstract in nature but based around a theme.
This piece is the second in a series of inspired by Japanese cherry blossom (sakura) and blue skies.
Wharfedale Woolworks began in 2010, when I took redundancy from ma dull office job and opened an online shop, originally offering hand-dyed yarns and fibres. After completing a Masters degree and taking on a new job I no longer had time to dye on a regular basis, so took a break for a couple of years. This year, after reducing working hours for a better work-life balance I am now re-opening and offering hand dyed yarns, handspun art yarns, prepared fibres in different formats for spinning and also some luxury hand knits and woven textile wall hangings.
I am autistic and suffer from fibromyalgia and depression. I’m also awaiting assessment for ADHD, so all of my fibre related activities are highly therapeutic and restorative. I take great pride in my work and I value my time, so items are priced to account fairly for this. I hope you gain as much enjoyment from my products as I did from their creation.
